Day 1: Khugnu Khan Nature Reserve & Bayan Gobi sand dunes

Drive to the Bayan Gobi Sand Dunes, a small desert surrounded by hills, willow trees, streams, and bushes in central Mongolia. The dunes stretch about 80 km in length and 9-10 km at their widest point. After resting at a ger camp, visit a nomadic family to learn about the nomadic lifestyle. The sand dunes are ideal for camel riding, and you will ride the gentle two-humped Bactrian camel.

Day 2: Orkhon Waterfall & Horse riding

Orkhon Waterfall, also known as Ulaan Tsutgalan, is one of the largest and most beautiful waterfalls in Mongolia. It is in the Orkhon Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The waterfall was formed by volcanic activity around 20,000 years ago and drops about 24 meters into a scenic gorge. Surrounded by forested mountains and open pastureland, the valley is home to yaks and other livestock. Stay overnight in a ger camp.

Day 3: Tovkhon Monastery & Tsenkher Hot Springs

In the morning, Tovkhon Monastery is located on a rocky mountain peak surrounded by dense forest, at an altitude of 2,312 meters above sea level. The monastery stands on a small flat area among steep cliffs. It was founded in 1651 by Zanabazar (the first Bogd Gegeen of Mongolian Buddhism). Explore the monastery and meditation caves and enjoy panoramic views from the mountaintop. Afterward, travel to Tsenkher Hot Springs to relax in natural outdoor hot pools surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery. Overnight at a tourist camp.

Day 4: Karakorum museum & Erdene Zuu Monastery

Just outside Kharkhorin in central Mongolia, Erdene Zuu Monastery is a must-visit for history and culture lovers. Built in 1586 on the ruins of the ancient capital Kharkhorum, it’s Mongolia’s oldest Buddhist monastery. Wander among 108 gleaming white stupas and soak in the peaceful atmosphere while discovering centuries of spiritual and cultural heritage. A short walk away, the Karakorum Museum (opened in 2011) brings the Mongol Empire to life. Explore fascinating archaeological finds from the Orkhon Valley and learn about the rise and fall of Kharkhorum, Mongolia’s legendary ancient capital.

Day 5: Back to Ulaanbaatar

Drive back to Ulaanbaatar, stopping along the way for a relaxing lunch break. Upon arrival, check into your hotel.

Where you stay.

Three of your four nights on this 5-day Central Mongolia tour are at established ger camps, traditional Mongolian felt tents at tourist camps with private bedding, communal dining, and shared shower and toilet blocks. One night is with a nomadic family in their working ger camp, simpler, no shower, but the most authentic experience of the route. Bedding is provided; you do not bring a sleeping bag. The first and last nights of the trip are at your hotel in Ulaanbaatar (not included; we can recommend or arrange).

What to bring.

After booking, we send a detailed packing list customized to your dates and the season. The essentials: layered clothing for cool nights and warm days, sun protection (broad-spectrum SPF, brimmed hat, sunglasses), a rain shell for summer thunderstorms, sturdy walking shoes for the Tovkhon climb, a small daypack, headlamp or torch (ger camps have limited lighting), a reusable water bottle, hand sanitiser, and any personal medications. For shoulder-season trips (May or September), add a warm fleece and gloves. Most ger camps have power outlets but a power bank is useful as backup.

The longest single days are Day 1 (Ulaanbaatar to Bayan Gobi, about 6 hours) and Day 5 (Karakorum back to Ulaanbaatar, about 6 hours). Days 2 to 4 are touring days with shorter transfers (2 to 4 hours of driving) plus stops, walks, and activities. Most of the route is paved; side trips to Tovkhon Monastery and Tsenkher Hot Springs are on dirt tracks. Travel is by Toyota Land Cruiser.

What is the best time of year for the 5-day Central Mongolia tour?

June through August is peak season for the 5-day Central Mongolia tour, warm days, long daylight, all ger camps fully open, the Orkhon Valley at its greenest. May and September are good shoulder months with fewer travelers, cooler nights, the green still on the land in May and gold leaves in September. We do not run this tour from October through April: mountain passes can become unreliable, and most ger camps along the route are closed.

Is this Central Mongolia tour suitable for a first visit to Mongolia?

Yes. The 5-day Central Mongolia tour is our most popular first-time-in-Mongolia trip. It covers the country's cultural heart in a focused window, the ancient capital, the UNESCO valley, a mountaintop monastery, and a taste of nomadic life with camel and horse riding. For visitors with a week, this leaves time for one or two days in Ulaanbaatar before or after. For visitors with two weeks, consider extending into the Gobi Desert (8 to 10 day combinations) or doing the longer 9-day Central with Eight Lakes.

Do I need to be physically fit for the 5-day Central Mongolia tour?

Moderate fitness is sufficient for this tour. The most physical activity is the 30-minute walk up to Tovkhon Monastery on a stone path. Horseback riding through the Orkhon Valley is optional (1 to 2 hours, beginner-friendly). Camel riding at Bayan Gobi is short and gentle. Long driving days require sitting comfortably for several hours. There are no required hikes or strenuous activities. Travelers with mobility limitations can skip the Tovkhon climb (the views from the parking area are still excellent) and remain on the steppe-level route.

What is the longest single drive day on this tour?

The two longest drive days are Day 1 (Ulaanbaatar to Bayan Gobi sand dunes, about 280 kilometers and 6 hours including a lunch stop) and Day 5 (Karakorum back to Ulaanbaatar, about 380 kilometers and 6 hours, with a lunch stop on the way). The middle days are shorter touring days with 2 to 4 hours of driving plus visits, walks, and activities. We break long days with stops every 90 minutes.

Can I add Naadam Festival to a 5-day Central Mongolia tour?

Yes. Naadam falls July 11-13 each year. The 5-day Central Mongolia tour can be timed so that the trip starts or ends on the festival days, or you can add 1 to 2 extra days in Ulaanbaatar around the tour to attend the opening ceremony, archery, and ankle-bone shooting venues. The Naadam Festival 4-day tour focuses specifically on the festival; the 5-day Central tour covers the country's cultural sites without the festival timing constraint. Does this 5-day tour include horseback riding?

Yes. Horseback riding through the Orkhon Valley is included on Day 2, typically 1 to 2 hours. The horses are well-trained and used to beginners; helmets are available. Riding is optional, non-riders can hike, walk, or relax at the ger camp instead. The 9-day Eight Lakes version of the Central Mongolia tour involves four full days of riding and is a different experience, recommended for travelers comfortable on horseback for several hours per day.

Can two solo travelers book this 5-day Central Mongolia tour together?

Yes. Our 5-day Central Mongolia tour runs as a private trip for your group, two solo travelers can book together (ger camps have twin-share rooms; we can arrange single supplements if requested). Larger groups of 3 to 6 travelers cost less per person. We do not run scheduled departures with strangers; the trip you book is your trip, with your group only.
