Day 1: Terelj National Park

Experience the natural beauty of Terelj National Park, home to striking rock formations, lush valleys, and traditional ger camps. Do not miss Turtle Rock, a giant granite formation shaped like a turtle, and Ariyabal Meditation Temple, perched on a mountainside with peaceful surroundings and wide-open views. Horseback riding through the parks valleys. Nearby, the Chinggis Khan Statue rises 40 meters high, celebrating Mongolias legendary leader. Explore the museum inside and climb to the horse`s head for panoramic views you will never forget. Stay overnight in a tourist camp.

Day 2: Khugnu Khan Nature Reserve and Semi-Gobi

Khugnu Khan Nature Reserve, where mountains, forests, steppe, desert, and mineral springs meet. Explore the Elsen Tasarkhai sand dunes, part of the Great Mongolian Sand Dunes, stretching about 80 km. Stay overnight in a nomadic family ger camp and experience traditional Mongolian life. The sand dunes are ideal for camel riding, and you will ride the gentle two-humped Bactrian camel.

Day 3: Back to UB via Hustai National Park

Travel to Hustai National Park, famous for the reintroduction of the Takhi (Przewalski’s horse), the world’s only true wild horse. Enjoy short hikes through the park and observe wildlife such as wild horses, marmots, deer, and occasionally wolves. In the afternoon, we will drive back to Ulaanbaatar. End of the tour.

Where you stay.

Two nights outside Ulaanbaatar. Day 1 ends at a Terelj ger camp, traditional felt tent with private bedding, communal dining, and shared shower and toilet blocks. Day 2 ends with a nomadic family ger camp at Khugnu Khan / Bayan Gobi, simpler, no shower, but the most authentic experience of the route. Bedding is provided at both. The first and last nights of the trip are at your Ulaanbaatar hotel (not included; we can recommend or arrange).

What to bring.

After booking, we send a detailed packing list customized to your dates and the season. Standard essentials: layered clothing for cool nights and warm days, sun protection (broad-spectrum SPF, brimmed hat, sunglasses), a rain shell for summer thunderstorms, sturdy walking shoes, a small daypack, headlamp or torch, a reusable water bottle, hand sanitiser, and any personal medications. For shoulder-season trips (May or September), add a warm fleece, gloves, and a hat. A power bank is useful as backup; ger camps have power outlets but availability is limited.

What does the 3-day Semi-Desert and Terelj tour cover?

Day 1: Chinggis Khan equestrian statue, Terelj National Park (Turtle Rock, Aryabal Meditation Temple), overnight at a Terelj ger camp. Day 2: drive west to Khugnu Khan Nature Reserve and Bayan Gobi sand dunes, with Bactrian camel riding and an overnight with a nomadic family. Day 3: Hustai National Park (wild Przewalski horses) on the way back, then the drive to Ulaanbaatar.

What are the wild horses at Hustai?

Hustai National Park is the home of the Takhi (Przewalski's horse), the world's only true wild horse. The species was extinct in the wild by the 1960s, surviving only in zoos. Reintroduction to Hustai began in 1992 and the wild herd today numbers around 400. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to see them at watering points; midday they retreat to the higher slopes.

What is special about Bayan Gobi?

Bayan Gobi is a small sand desert at the edge of the Khangai mountains, 80 kilometers long, with two-humped Bactrian camels for short rides and nomadic family ger camps to stay in overnight. It is sometimes called the Semi-Gobi because it gives a taste of the desert experience (camels, dunes, family stay) without the multi-day commitment of the full Gobi tours.

How much driving is on this tour?

Around 700 to 800 kilometers across the three days. Day 1 is 70 to 100 kilometers (Ulaanbaatar to Terelj). Day 2 is around 280 kilometers (Terelj to Khugnu Khan, around 5 hours). Day 3 is around 320 kilometers (Khugnu Khan to Hustai to Ulaanbaatar, around 5 to 6 hours including the Hustai visit).

Best time of year for the 3-day tour?

May through September, best for the dune and Hustai visits when the weather is mild and the wild horses are active. June through August is peak. We do not run this tour from October through April; the Bayan Gobi family camps close in winter.

Can I add horseback riding?

Yes, optional. Terelj has horse stations near the ger camps for 30-minute to 2-hour rides; Bayan Gobi area has nomadic-family horses for shorter rides. Pricing paid locally, typically around $20 to $30 per hour. Camel riding at Bayan Gobi is included.

What is included in the 3-day tour?

Yes, the variety (dunes, wild horses, rocky formations, camel ride) tends to engage children well. The pacing is moderate, the walks are short, and the ger-camp and family-camp overnights are usually highlights. We recommend a minimum age of around five for the camel ride and the family stay; younger children can come but the longer driving days may be tiring.

Where do you stay on the 3-day tour?

Day 1 at a Terelj ger camp (private bedding, communal dining, shared shower and toilet). Day 2 at a nomadic family ger camp at Bayan Gobi (simpler, no shower, but the most authentic experience). Bedding is provided at both. The first and last nights of the trip are at your Ulaanbaatar hotel.

Can the 3-day be extended?

Yes. Adding 2 to 4 days gives a Central Mongolia loop (Karakorum, Erdene Zuu, the Orkhon Valley, Tovkhon Monastery). Adding 5 to 7 days gives a combined Central-and-Gobi route.
