Day by day.

Day 1: Tsagaan Suvarga (White Stupa)

Visit Tsagaan Suvarga, meaning “White Stupa,” one of the Gobi’s most iconic landmarks. These colorful limestone cliffs rise 30-60 meters high and stretch over 400 meters. Once an ancient ocean bed, marine fossils and shells can still be found here. Hike through the cliffs for spectacular photography, especially at sunrise and sunset.

Day 2: Gobi Gurban Saikhan National Park & Eagle Valley

“Explore Gobi Gurban Saikhan National Park, known as the “Three Beauties of the Gobi.” Hike through Yoliin Am, a dramatic rock canyon that stays icy until late June, home to ibex and the endangered Argali wild sheep. The hike takes approximately 2-2.5 hours round-trip.

Day 3: Khongor Sand Dunes & Camel Riding

Drive to the Khongor Sand Dunes, also called the Singing Dunes for the sound the wind makes across the sand. Climb the dunes early in the morning or late evening for striking views of the desert.

Day 4: Camel Riding & Free Exploration

Enjoy riding two-humped Bactrian camels and explore the surrounding desert landscapes. Spend the day experiencing traditional nomadic life.

Day 5: Flaming Cliffs (Bayanzag)

Visit Bayanzag, the Flaming Cliffs, famous for the 1922 discovery of the first dinosaur eggs by Roy Chapman Andrews. Walk among the red sandstone cliffs where dinosaurs lived 60 million years ago.

Day 6: Karakorum & Erdene Zuu Monastery

Explore Karakorum, the 13th-century capital of Genghis Khaan’s Great Mongol Empire. Visit Erdene Zuu Monastery, Mongolia’s oldest Buddhist monastery, and its active temples and museum. Also visit the Karakorum Museum to see artifacts from the ancient city.

Day 7: Khugnu Khan & Elsen Tasarkhai Sand Dunes

Travel to Khugnu Khan Natural Reserve, located at the border of Uvurkhangai, Tuv, and Bulgan provinces. Explore Elsen Tasarkhai, part of the Great Mongolian Sand Dunes, stretching 80 km. Enjoy the striking combination of desert, mountains, rivers, and green grasslands. Overnight in a ger camp.

Day 8: Return to Ulaanbaatar

After breakfast, enjoy a horse ride through the scenic surroundings before driving back to Ulaanbaatar.

This 8-day Gobi-and-Karakorum tour is the right itinerary for travelers who want both the four landmark Gobi sites and the imperial capital of Karakorum in a single trip, without the longer 9 or 10 day combined variants. The Gobi half is the same loop as our 6-day Gobi Desert: Tsagaan Suvarga, Yoliin Am, the Khongor Sand Dunes, the Flaming Cliffs at Bayanzag. The Karakorum half on Days 6 to 7 covers Erdene Zuu Monastery (founded 1586 on the imperial ruins, with 108 stupas around the compound), the Karakorum Museum (archaeological finds from the imperial city), and the Khugnu Khan / Elsen Tasarkhai sand dunes on the way back to Ulaanbaatar. The 8-day adds two extra days at the Khongor area (a free-exploration day on Day 4) compared to the 6-day Gobi.

For travelers comparing options: the 6-day Gobi covers the four landmark sites without Karakorum. The 7-day Gobi adds Baga Gazariin Chuluu and Ongi Monastery instead. The 9-day Gobi-and-Karakorum extends with an additional day at the Khongor Dunes and a longer stay at Karakorum. The 10-day Gobi-and-Central Mongolia adds the full Central core, Tovkhon Monastery, Tsenkher Hot Springs, the Orkhon Valley. This 8-day is the right choice when two weeks is too long but you want the imperial-capital cultural day in addition to the Gobi loop.

Where you stay.

Six of your seven nights on this 8-day Gobi-and-Karakorum tour are at established ger camps, traditional Mongolian felt tents at tourist camps with private bedding, communal dining, and shared shower and toilet blocks. One or two nights are with nomadic families, at the Khongor Dunes (camel herders) and optionally at Khugnu Khan, simpler, no shower, but the most authentic experience of the route. Bedding is provided. The first and last nights of the trip are at your Ulaanbaatar hotel.

What to bring.

After booking, we send a detailed packing list customized to your dates. The Gobi essentials: layered clothing for warm days and cold nights (the desert drops sharply after dark), strong sun protection (broad-spectrum SPF, brimmed hat, sunglasses, lip balm), a wind-and-dust shell for afternoons on the dunes, sturdy walking shoes for the Yoliin Am canyon and the Khongor climb, a small daypack, headlamp or torch (ger camps have limited lighting), a reusable water bottle, hand sanitiser, and any personal medications. For shoulder-season trips (May or September), add a warm fleece, gloves, and a hat, nights can drop below freezing. A power bank is useful as backup; most ger camps have power outlets but not always reliable.

Why is Karakorum significant?

Karakorum was the 13th-century capital of the Mongol Empire, founded under Chinggis Khan's son Ögedei in 1235. At its height the empire reached from Korea to the Black Sea, and Karakorum was the political center. The wooden city was abandoned after the empire's capital moved to Beijing in 1271 and the site was destroyed in 1388. Erdene Zuu Monastery was built on the imperial ruins in 1586. Today the site itself is small, but the museum and the monastery walls are the cultural anchor of any Central or combined Mongolia tour.

How is the 8-day different from the 6-day Gobi?

The 8-day adds two things to the 6-day Gobi loop: an extra day at the Khongor Sand Dunes (Day 4 is a free-exploration day with optional camel riding) and two days at Karakorum and Erdene Zuu on the return. The 6-day skips Karakorum entirely. Choose the 8-day if you want the imperial-capital cultural day; choose the 6-day if you want the desert focus without combined-region travel.

How is the 8-day different from the 9-day Gobi-and-Karakorum?

The 9-day version starts with a day at Terelj National Park and the Chinggis Khan equestrian statue before heading to the Gobi, and adds an additional day at Khongor and a longer stay at Karakorum. The 8-day skips Terelj and the statue. Choose the 9-day if you want the rocky-formation national park as bookend; choose the 8-day if you want a tighter Gobi-and-Karakorum focus.

What is the best time of year for this tour?

June through August is peak season, warm days, all ger camps fully open, the Khongor dunes accessible. May and September are good shoulder months: fewer travelers, cooler nights, shoulder light on the cliffs at sunrise and sunset. We do not run this tour from October through April.

How much driving on this tour?

Total driving is roughly 2,200 to 2,400 kilometers across the eight days. The longest single days are Day 1 (Ulaanbaatar to Tsagaan Suvarga, around 6 to 7 hours) and Day 8 (Khugnu Khan back to Ulaanbaatar, around 5 to 6 hours). Days 2 to 7 mix touring, walks, and shorter transfers. Most of the Gobi route is on dirt and gravel tracks; the Land Cruiser handles them comfortably.

Where do you stay on this tour?

Most nights are at established ger camps, traditional felt tents with private bedding, communal dining, and shared shower and toilet facilities. One or two nights are with nomadic families (at the Khongor Dunes and optionally at Khugnu Khan); those nights are simpler but the most authentic experience of the route. The first and last nights of the trip are at your Ulaanbaatar hotel.

Can I climb the Khongor Sand Dunes?

Yes. The dunes run 180 kilometers along the foot of the Altai and reach 80 meters at their highest point. A short Bactrian camel ride takes you to the base; the climb itself is 30 to 45 minutes through soft sand, and the descent takes about ten minutes. The 8-day gives you two days at Khongor (Day 3 for the camel ride and dune climb, Day 4 as a free-exploration day), more flexibility for the timing of the climb.

What is included in the 8-day tour?

Is the 8-day tour suitable for first-time visitors?

It can be, the 8-day combines the country's two most-visited regions in a single trip. Most first-time visitors do a Central Mongolia tour (5 to 9 days, covering Karakorum, the Orkhon Valley, and Tovkhon Monastery) and save the Gobi for a return visit.
