Day 1: Tsagaan Suvarga (White Stupa)

Visit Tsagaan Suvarga, one of the Gobi’s most famous landmarks. These colorful limestone cliffs rise 30-60 meters high and stretch over 400 meters. Once part of an ancient ocean bed, marine fossils and clamshells can still be found here. The cliffs are particularly striking at sunrise and sunset. Hike through the formations for unforgettable photography opportunities.

Day 2: Gobi Gurban Saikhan National Park & Eagle Valley

Travel to Gobi Gurban Saikhan National Park, meaning “Three Beauties of the Gobi.” Explore Eagle Valley (Yoliin Am), a narrow rock canyon that remains icy until late June. Hike 2.0-2.5 hours into the valley, home to endangered Argali wild mountain sheep and ibex, and enjoy dramatic canyon scenery.

Day 3: Khongor Sand Dunes & Camel Riding

Drive to the spectacular Khongor Sand Dunes (Khongoryn Els), also known as the Singing Dunes for the humming sound the wind makes. Climb the dunes in the early morning or late afternoon for wide-open desert views and enjoy riding two-humped Bactrian camels.

Day 4: Flaming Cliffs (Bayanzag)

Visit Bayanzag, or the Flaming Cliffs, one of the world’s most famous paleontological sites. In 1922, Roy Chapman Andrews discovered the first dinosaur eggs here. Walk among the red sandstone cliffs where dinosaurs roamed 60 million years ago.

Day 5: Khugnu Khan & Elsen Tasarkhai

Explore Khugnu Khan Natural Reserve, located at the border of Uvurkhangai, Tuv, and Bulgan provinces. The area combines mountains, forests, steppe, Gobi-type desert, and mineral water sources. Visit Elsen Tasarkhai, part of the Great Mongolian Sand Dunes stretching 80 km. Enjoy the striking mix of desert, mountains, rivers, and grasslands. Overnight in a ger camp.

Day 6: Terelj National Park

Terelj National Park offers striking rock formation, lush valleys, and traditional ger camps. Explore turtle rock, enjoy beautiful views from Aryabal Temple.

Day 7: Chinggis Khaan Statue & Return to Ulaanbaatar

The Chinggis Khan Equestrian Statue rises 40 meters high, honoring Mongolian’s legendary leader. You can explore the museum inside, climb the horse`s head for wide-open panoramic views. After visiting the statue, we will drive to Ulaanbaatar.

Where you stay.

Five of your six nights on this 7-day Gobi and Central Mongolia tour are at established ger camps, traditional Mongolian felt tents at tourist camps with private bedding, communal dining, and shared shower and toilet blocks. One night is with a nomadic camel-herding family in their working ger camp at the Khongor Dunes, simpler, no shower, but the most authentic experience of the route. Terelj has good ger-camp infrastructure (the most-visited park in the country). Bedding is provided. The first and last nights of the trip are at your Ulaanbaatar hotel.

What to bring.

After booking, we send a detailed packing list customized to your dates. The Gobi essentials: layered clothing for warm days and cold nights (the desert drops sharply after dark), strong sun protection (broad-spectrum SPF, brimmed hat, sunglasses, lip balm), a wind-and-dust shell for afternoons on the dunes, sturdy walking shoes for the Yoliin Am canyon and the Khongor climb, a small daypack, headlamp or torch (ger camps have limited lighting), a reusable water bottle, hand sanitiser, and any personal medications. For shoulder-season trips (May or September), add a warm fleece, gloves, and a hat, nights can drop below freezing. A power bank is useful as backup; most ger camps have power outlets but not always reliable.

What is Terelj National Park?

Terelj is the most accessible national park from Ulaanbaatar, around 70 kilometers and two hours of mostly paved road. It is part of the Khan Khentii protected area and includes the dramatic Turtle Rock (a 24-meter granite formation shaped like a turtle), the Aryabal Meditation Temple on a forested hillside (a 30-minute walk up), and good walking and short-ride routes through larch forest and steppe. Most of the park's landscape is rocky outcrops and forested valleys, very different from the open Gobi steppe.

What is the Chinggis Khan equestrian statue?

The Chinggis Khan Equestrian Statue at Tsonjin Boldog is the world's largest equestrian statue, 40 meters tall, completed in 2008, located 54 kilometers east of Ulaanbaatar on the way to Terelj. The statue depicts Chinggis Khan on horseback, holding a golden whip. Inside the base is a museum with archaeological exhibits from the Bronze Age and the Mongol Empire. You can take an elevator to the horse's mane and walk out onto the platform on top of the statue's head for panoramic views.

What is the best time of year for this tour?

June through August is peak season, warm days, all ger camps fully open, the Khongor dunes accessible, and Terelj forest fully out in leaf. May and September are good shoulder months: fewer travelers, cooler nights. We do not run this tour from October through April.

How much driving on this tour?

Total driving is roughly 2,000 to 2,200 kilometers across seven days. The longest single days are Day 1 (Ulaanbaatar to Tsagaan Suvarga, around 6 to 7 hours) and Day 5 (Khongor area back to Khugnu Khan, around 6 hours). The Terelj transfer on Day 6 is around 2 hours of mostly paved road. Most of the Gobi route is on dirt and gravel tracks; the Land Cruiser handles them comfortably.

How is this 7-day different from the other 7-day Gobi tour?

We run two 7-day Gobi tours: this one (Gobi and Terelj) and the 7-day Gobi Desert (Baga Gazariin Chuluu and Ongi Monastery). This one combines the Gobi with the most accessible national park near Ulaanbaatar and ends with the Chinggis Khan statue. The Gobi Desert 7-day stays in the Gobi region, granite mountains and a ruined-and-rebuilt monastery. Choose this 7-day for the combined desert-and-park experience; the other for a deeper Gobi-only loop.

Is horse riding included at Terelj?

Horse riding at Terelj is optional and not included. Local horse stations near the ger camps offer 30-minute to 2-hour rides at the time of visit; pricing is paid directly. The included activity at Terelj is walking and exploring the rock formations and the Aryabal Temple. Travelers who want more riding can add a Terelj ride at the time.

Is this tour suitable for families with children?

Yes for older children (around 8 and up). The Khongor camel ride and dune climb engage younger travelers, and Terelj is well-suited for shorter walks and ger-camp time. The longer driving days through the Gobi require sitting comfortably for 5 to 7 hours, consider the 5-day Central tour for very young children if the Gobi distances are a concern.
