Day 1: Tsagaan Suvarga (White Cliffs)

Visit Tsagaan Suvarga, or “White Stupa,” one of the Gobi’s most iconic landmarks. These colorful limestone cliffs rise 30-60 meters high and stretch over 400 meters. Once an ancient ocean bed, marine fossils and shells can still be found here. The cliffs are particularly striking at sunrise and sunset. Hike through the formations for spectacular photography opportunities.

Day 2: Gobi Gurban Saikhan National Park & Yoliin am

Travel to Gobi Gurban Saikhan National Park, meaning “Three Beauties of the Gobi.” Explore Yoliin Am, a narrow rock canyon that remains icy until late June. Hike 2.0-2.5 hours into the valley, home to ibex and endangered Argali wild sheep, and enjoy dramatic canyon scenery.

Day 3: Khongor Sand Dunes & Camel Riding

Drive to the Khongor Sand Dunes, the famous Singing Dunes. Visit a local nomad family, ride a two-humped Bactrian camel, and climb one of the dunes. Spread sand against the wind from the dune top to hear the dunes “sing.” Enjoy wide-open views of the Gobi Desert.

Day 4: Flaming Cliffs (Bayanzag)

Visit Bayanzag, also known as the Flaming Cliffs, one of the world’s most famous paleontological sites. In 1922, Roy Chapman Andrews discovered the first dinosaur eggs here. Walk on the red sandstone cliffs where dinosaurs roamed 60 million years ago.

Day 5: Khogno Khan Natural Reserve & Elsentasarkhai Sand Dunes

Explore Khogno Khan Natural Reserve and the Elsentasarkhai Sand Dunes. This unique area combines the desert landscape of the Gobi with the lush forests, rivers, and grasslands of the Khangai region. Enjoy nature walks and take in the striking contrast of sand dunes against mountains and green pastures.

Day 6: Uvgun Khiid & Return to Ulaanbaatar

After breakfast, hike around the beautiful scenery and visit Uvgun Khiid, a Buddhist temple nestled in Khugnu Khan mountains. Enjoy a horse ride in the area before driving back to Ulaanbaatar.

Four of your five nights on this 6-day Gobi Desert tour are at established ger camps, traditional Mongolian felt tents at tourist camps with private bedding, communal dining, and shared shower and toilet blocks. One night is with a nomadic camel-herding family in their working ger camp at the Khongor Dunes, simpler, no shower, but the most authentic experience of the route. Bedding is provided; you do not bring a sleeping bag. The first and last nights of the trip are at your hotel in Ulaanbaatar (not included; we can recommend or arrange).

What to bring.

After booking, we send a detailed packing list customized to your dates. The Gobi essentials: layered clothing for warm days and cold nights (the desert drops sharply after dark), strong sun protection (broad-spectrum SPF, brimmed hat, sunglasses, lip balm), a wind-and-dust shell for afternoons on the dunes, sturdy walking shoes for the Yoliin Am canyon and the Khongor climb, a small daypack, headlamp or torch (ger camps have limited lighting), a reusable water bottle, hand sanitiser, and any personal medications. For shoulder-season trips (May or September), add a warm fleece, gloves, and a hat, nights can drop below freezing. A power bank is useful as backup; most ger camps have power outlets but not always reliable.

The longest single days are Day 1 (Ulaanbaatar to Tsagaan Suvarga, about 6 to 7 hours) and Day 6 (Khugnu Khan back to Ulaanbaatar, about 5 to 6 hours). Days 2 to 5 are touring days with shorter transfers (3 to 5 hours of driving) plus stops, walks, and rides. Most of the route is on dirt and gravel tracks; the Land Cruiser handles them comfortably but the pace is slower than paved highways.

What is the best time of year for the 6-day Gobi tour?

June through August is peak season for the 6-day Gobi Desert tour, warm days around 30°C, long daylight, all ger camps fully open, the Khongor dunes accessible. May and September are good shoulder months with fewer travelers, cooler nights, and shoulder light on the cliffs at sunrise and sunset. We do not run this tour from October through April: most ger camps along the route are closed and the unpaved sections of the route can become unreliable in the cold.

Is the 6-day Gobi tour suitable for a first visit to Mongolia?

It can be, the Gobi is a strong first Mongolia trip if you are most drawn to desert landscape, dunes, fossils, and remote driving. That said, most first-time visitors do a Central Mongolia tour (5 to 9 days, covering Karakorum, the Orkhon Valley, and Tovkhon Monastery) and save the Gobi for a return visit, or combine both regions on the 8 to 10 day Gobi-and-Central itineraries. Do I need to be physically fit for the 6-day Gobi tour?

Moderate fitness is sufficient. The most physical activity is the climb up one face of the Khongor Sand Dunes, 30 to 45 minutes through soft sand to the ridge. The Yoliin Am canyon walk is around 4 kilometers each way on a gentle path along a stream. The Bactrian camel ride is short and gentle, suitable for beginners. Long driving days require sitting comfortably for 5 to 7 hours. Travelers who would rather skip the dune climb can stay at the base and ride the camel; the views from the camp are still excellent.

Can I climb the Khongor Sand Dunes?

Yes. The dunes run 180 kilometers along the foot of the Altai and reach 80 meters at their highest point. A short Bactrian camel ride takes you to the base; the climb itself is 30 to 45 minutes through soft sand, and the descent takes about ten minutes. It is steep but not technical. Most travelers climb one face and rest at the ridge before descending. The wind-driven hum that gives the dunes their name (the "Singing Dunes") is audible when sand spills down a steep face at the right angle.

Can I fly to the Gobi instead of driving?

Yes, on this 6-day tour. A one-way domestic flight is available between Ulaanbaatar and Dalanzadgad (around 90 minutes); travelers can fly down and drive back, or vice versa, which trims roughly two long driving days off the route. Flights are seasonal and weather-dependent, we confirm availability and pricing at booking. The fly-and-drive option is recommended for travelers who would rather spend more time at the sites and less behind the wheel.

Are there really dinosaur fossils at the Flaming Cliffs?

Yes. Bayanzag is where Roy Chapman Andrews led the 1922 expedition that found the world's first known dinosaur eggs, and the site is still actively researched. The ground is strewn with fragments of bone and shell. Removing fossils from the site is illegal under Mongolian law, they are part of the national archaeological record. The Flaming Cliffs themselves are a small site; you walk the rim in an hour, usually in late afternoon when the red sandstone is at its most saturated.
